The paediatric team at the Desmond Tutu TB Centre (DTTC), which is located at the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University, needs a laboratory technologist to assist with implementing clinical research studies among children affected by tuberculosis (TB). The studies are conducted primarily at the paediatric research unit at Tygerberg Hospital.
Duties:
·
Implementing and managing laboratory work related to clinical research studies and other projects. Implementation and management include:
·
Liaising with external laboratories such as Bio Analytical Research Corporation South Africa (BARC) and National Laboratory Health Services (NHLS);
·
Liaising internally – with DTTC clinical teams (including principal investigators and study coordinators) and the DTTC lab team;
·
Drawing up lab-specific contracts and documents;
·
Preparing internal laboratory training sessions;
·
Completing laboratory case report forms (CRFs);
·
Reviewing laboratory data.
·
Compiling and performing version control of laboratory-related standard operating procedures (SOPs);
·
Capturing specimens on laboratory information management systems (LIMS);
·
Serving as primary contact person for any callouts regarding biorepository freezer alarms;
·
Helping to maintain laboratory equipment at the site;
·
Ensuring site compliance with all laboratory-related regulatory procedures;
·
Assisting with the processing, storage and transport of biological research samples (e.g. blood, sputum and urine) when required;
·
Performing TB microbiological tests on a variety of samples, including stool;
·
Acting as backup for other laboratory technologists at the Brooklyn Chest PK unit and the Kuils River site;
·
Assisting with other laboratory activities such as quality assurance.

Candidate Requirements:
·
A three-year tertiary qualification in biological, medical, health or life sciences;
·
Experience in a research environment, especially of sample handling and of quality control and assurance;
·
Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) such as Laboratory Data Management Systems (LDMS) and REDCap;
·
Excellent computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, and management of multiple files and folders;
·
Awareness of the importance of accurate protocol implementation;
·
Excellent investigative skills and attention to detail;
·
Good time management and planning skills;
·
The ability to work autonomously;
·
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to function in a team;
·
A flexible approach to problem-solving that is adaptable to a constantly changing environment, and the ability to show initiative;
·
Effective organisational and administrative skills;
·
A valid driver’s licence and own transport;
·
Good written and verbal communication skills in English;
·
Willingness and availability to work flexible hours.
Recommendation:
Training in good clinical practice (GCP) and good clinical laboratory practice.
