MAIN PURPOSE OF POSITION

To research, write, develop and maintain South African National Standards according to the standards development process and formulate, develop and maintain standards including the writing of technical requirements into written standards and creating the awareness of these standards to industry experts.

Detailed Description:

Write South African National Standards (Complex and specialized areas) in line with the Division’s process and procedures

Plan all the milestones for the delivery of the standard together with the Programme Manager

Complete PWI stage (research) for all new enquiries/request for standards and all reviews of published standards

Convene working group (WG) discussions/meetings with the Committee appointed working group (WG) members. Must formulate technical requirements into written standards

Work with the WG in order to get inputs to draft the working draft (WD) and finalise the WD.

Prepare and circulate committee drafts (stage 30) and ensure consensus is reached on the draft.

Facilitate the process of having the draft documents edited, technically reviewed, drawings prepared and typed as required.

Ensure that the standard is relevant, achieves the aims as set in the NWIP, is of good quality and is user friendly.

Provide progress reports regularly and alert the Programme Manager on deviations to the plan. Follow up on any outstanding actions raised during reports

Report back to relevant committee on progress of assigned work items and project progress

Collaborate and write standards across different disciplines as they relate to Water Efficiency, as required

Establish the South African mandate on international standards development activities

Establish the need to participate in International Committees and identify the standards projects that South Africa has to follow

Ensure that the projects identified for adoption have been registered and that the parallel adoption process has been followed

Ensure that leadership opportunities in the international committees are identified, e.g. Chairmanship, secretariat, WG convener and discussed and that a position paper is prepared for the Programme manager’s approval

Ensure that the mandate/South Africa’s interests on international work items have been defended by the delegate representing South Africa and identify issues for the Programme Manager to resolve

Study the trip report to ensure the tracking and delivery of the mandate and follow up on all actions identified in the report

Vote/comment on international documents using own knowledge and the decisions of the mirror committee

Convene international working group meetings (where applicable)

Provide secretariat services to the international standards development committee (as applicable)

Correctly follow the standards development process

Guide, educate and advise stakeholders

Co-ordinate all standards development activities relating to Water Efficiency

Lead discussion papers during the development of complex standards to stimulate debate

Lead workshops with the Regulator, industry, SMEs and other stakeholders on standards that will affect them prior to the development of standards and ensure that their inputs are included during the actual development of a standard

Educate all stakeholders on the standards developed for the building industry

Represent the organization as proficient in the standards development process and knowledgeable about the standards developed within the Buildings sector

Keep abreast of any new developments taking place in the sphere of control regarding standards and the development thereof

Deliver excellent customer service

Provide excellent customer service by meeting and exceeding the client requirements as per their requests

Handle queries and resolve problems as they relate to standards

Optimize own and others performance

Participate in the team as a productive team member

Manage own performance in order to optimize SABS Standards Division performance

Value diversity and actively build business relationships

Develop, support and mentor employees within the team on an ongoing basis as and when required (all levels)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Degree / National Diploma in Food Sciences/ Microbiology / Environmental Health

Minimum 3 years’ experience in the food sciences industry

Understands the standards development environment

Excellent command of the English language

Relevant I.T. Proficiency (MS Office, Internet, etc.)

Excellent knowledge of industry terminology
