Applicants must have a four-year qualification from a university. Being registered with the Occupational Hygienist – SAIOH and Intermediate Certificate in Mine Environmental Control – Chamber of Mines) South African Institute for Occupational Hygiene(SAIOH) at the minimum of the Occupational Hygiene Technologist level will be an added advantage.

To conduct monthly surveys and provide reports.

To perform the duties of fire prevention in the mine as per regulation 5.1 of the MHSA.

To start work on 1 March 2020 in KZN

Responsibilities

OCCUPATIONAL SURVEYS AND THE MANAGEMENT OF FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS.

a. Noise Survey for hearing conservation purposes in accordance with the requirements of Regulation 9.2 of the MHSAct (29 of 1996). The survey shall include:

· area noise measurements at the Primary Wet Plant, Workshop, Mining area, Residue Storage Facility, an evaluation of the exposure of roving personnel and mobile equipment operators at all relevant work areas,

· The report on noise levels in accordance with the DMRs Noise Milestones (machine name, location and noise level). Five percent (5%) of the employees within each homogeneous exposure group (HEG) at the Mine shall be sampled over the course of an annual cycle period, with a minimum of five (5) sample, wherever is the greater.

b. Evaluation of employee exposure to Airborne Pollutants (dust, silica, welding fumes, DPM, CO, VOCs) as required in terms of Regulation 9.2 of the MHS Act (29 of 1996) and DMR Requirements. Five percent (5%) of the employees within each homogeneous exposure group (HEG at the mine shall be sampled over the course of an annual cycle period, with a minimum of five (5) samples whichever is greater.

c. Thermal stress survey at the various Activity Areas of the Mine for the purpose of categorizing the thermal environment. The survey shall be conducted during the warmest period for the year (January to March or October to December).

d. Evaluation of the illumination provided by self-propelled mobile machines at the Mine

e. A Health Risk Assessment as required in terms of Section 11 of the MHSAct (29 of 1996) will be conducted by the Section 12 Appointee

f. Fires and explosive Prevention as per the requirement of regulation 5.1 of the MHSA(29 of 1996

Drafting of Reports and Documents

a. Compile and submit Occupational Hygiene Reports for the DMR (Noise, Airborne Pollutants and Thermal Stress). Timely report delivery is essential and agreed timelines should be met.

b. Submit monthly reports to the Mine Management with reference to, planning, design, implementation, and management of Occupational Hygiene and the prevention of fires and explosions at the Mine. The Occupational Hygiene hazards that may cause illness or adverse health effects to persons.

c. Design and implement Codes of Practice relating to occupational hygiene and Fires and explosive Prevention to address all operational procedures. Codes of practice will be reviewed as required over the duration of the contract.

d. Design and implement an Occupational Hygiene Program in consultation with the Appointed Medical Practitioner.

e. Design and implement a Fire Risk Assessment in consultation with the Mine Engineer.

f. Preparation of Annual Hygiene Reports for the DMR (Noise, Airborne Pollutants and Thermal Stress).

Other Services

a) The legal appointment will be undertaken by the Technical Manager who holds the required qualifications (Registered Occupational Hygienist – SAIOH and Intermediate Certificate in Mine Environmental Control – Chamber of Mines). Services will be rendered on a part-time basis.

b) The Appointee will work in conjunction with the Appointed Medical Practitioner to ensure a correct and comprehensive medical surveillance program.

c) Assist with and provide guidance regarding fatigue management of employees at the Mine in conjunction with the Appointed Medical Practitioner.

d) Attend Health and Safety meetings with relevant stakeholders.
