A Professional Nurse vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium’s Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (RHI) in Cape Town.

Background:

The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges.

It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health and vaccinology. This is done through pioneering, multi-disciplinary research; responsive technical support and innovation in health services; and evidence-based policy development and advocacy with national, regional and global stakeholders.

The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a leading research institute attached to the University of the Witwatersrand. We address some of the greatest public health concerns affecting the region, including HIV, sexual and reproductive health, and vaccinology. We do this through pioneering, multi-disciplinary research; responsive technical support and innovation in health services; and evidence-based policy development and advocacy with national, regional and global stakeholders.

Main purpose of the job:

To support HIV and Sexual Reproductive Health services for Key Populations – Transgender sites

Location: Cape Town (TG)

Key performance areas:

Screen patients on HIV in all services provided at the clinic.
Examine and treat patients as per programme requirement.
Implement prevention strategies such as testing for HIV in TB patients, FP and STI, condom distribution, male circumcision and pre- and post-treatment adherence.
Implement the program area in PMTCT such as Paediatric diagnosis, care and treatment, reproductive health including family planning, general adult HIV treatment and chronic care, HIV wellness programs, Tuberculosis screening and care, Nurse-initiated and managed ART.
Treat HIV and opportunistic infections diagnosed.
Prescribe appropriate treatment in line with god pharmacy practice.
Provide ART and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as well as treat patients with concomitant diseases and or refer where appropriate according to DoH guidelines.
Identify and refer patients with ART failure or complications.
Support counsellors in adherence issues on patients.
Facilitate services such as down- and up-referrals.
Assist with SOPs that will improve the running of the clinic e.g. up -referral SOP.
Support baseline needs assessment for health systems improvement in HCHC.
Support planning around a tailored approach in conjunction with programme technical experts taking into consideration the needs and priorities of the clinic.
Support the development of project plans and timeline for addressing the identified needs and priorities in conjunction with counterparts.
In conjunction with the clinical team, implement CCMT programmes within the clinic.
Support the review of challenges and achievements in implementing different programs.
Track changes made that lead to improved outcome measures at the clinic level.
Integrate feedback from quarterly reports into programme implementation plan and subsequent progress reports.
Compile relevant donor and WRHI reports.
Transfer clinical and administrative skills to clinic counterparts and identify gaps in knowledge and mitigate accordingly.
Participate in monitoring activities mandated by the Training Department.
Provide ongoing coaching, mentoring, feedback and support.
Participate in ongoing mentorship programmes initiated by other WITS RHI stakeholders.
Attend to all staffing requirements and administration of subordinates.
Supervise and manage duties of subordinates.
Identify substandard performance by team members and coordinate interventions to improve performance.
Coach and train subordinates.
Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self-management.
Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained.
Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback.
Take ownership for driving own career development by participating in ongoing training and development activities such as conferences, workshops etc.

Required minimum education and training

Relevant Nursing diploma or equivalent.
Required minimum work experience

Minimum 3 years of experience in managing HIV and/or TB.
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

Certification/experience in HIV Management.
Sound technical knowledge Sexual Reproductive Health, Adult HIV, TB-HIV integration, Sexually Transmitted Infections.
Experience working in a donor-funded organisation / NGO or project-based environment. Knowledge of clinical systems and data management.
Experience in mentoring and in-service training. Good organizational and administrative skills together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Ordered and systematic in approach to tasks. Attention to detail. Pro-active, able to exercise discretion and independent decision-making. Able to prioritise own work load and work towards deadlines.
Self-motivated, able to work independently and work as part of a multidisciplinary team. Able to speak other African languages.
